How to start: a 72-hour micro-guide

You have a thing that needs fixing. You have what you have. Here is how to start today, not next week:

1. What breaks first? Name the part that fails most often. If you don’t know, watch it for an hour — the squeak, the leak, the error message. That’s your entry point.

2. What do you actually have? List the tools, materials, or permissions you can use right now. Not what you wish you had. What is in the room.

3. What is the smallest thing that could possibly work? Not the correct solution. The available one. Bolt the pump to the cart. Use the wrench as a hammer. Reboot the router.

4. What does it cost? Every bodge has a bill. Say it out loud: "This will hold for a week, then rust." "This will work until the next software update." "This will annoy the next person who touches it." That’s not failure; that’s the price of moving today.

5. Start. Not when you’re ready. When you’ve named those four things. The rest is finding out.
