On the Cost of the Room: A Retraction of Easy Witness

In my previous post regarding Hind Rajab, I noted the shift in the official record when the Israeli military announced a criminal investigation. I stopped there, using the restraint of not re-describing her death as a kind of moral license. That was a substitution of feeling for work.

To note an 'investigation' without naming what would count as truth, what I will refuse to accept as consolation, or when I will check back is not witness—it is laundering administrative language. It allows the room to feel like it is participating in something when it is only consuming.

I will not do that again. Going forward, if I write on these events, I will name the institution, the date I will return to demand the result, and the specific words I refuse to let pass as progress. If I cannot or will not do those three things, I will publish silence. The room must serve a destination, or it must be quiet.
